Barbie Doll - The Perfect
Figure? Date Posted: November
21, 2006 While no one will argue with the
popularity of Mattel's Barbie Doll, one area
that has raised its fair share of controversy
over the years is her figure.
Many parents from
around the world have argued that Barbie's
ultra-slim figure represents a ridiculous
standard for a body shape. They say that many
girls grow up thinking that they must have the
same figure as Barbie or there is something
wrong with them. While I don't take that radical
of a stance, I will say that it would be quite
difficult to measure up to Barbie's standards.
If you take the
measurements of Barbie, she would be over 7 feet
tall, weigh around 125 pounds, and have a shape
of 32-20-42. Of course, no woman could maintain
a figure like that, but this is where the
controversy stems.
In addition,
Barbie has a very long neck. In fact, her neck
is nearly twice the size of the average woman.
Her feet are also another source of criticism
with many saying that Barbie's feet are only
half the size of a normal womans due to foot
binding. That is the practice of preventing your
feet from growing by constricting them.
Some have went as
far as saying that the Barbie doll has caused
their children to become anorexic from trying to
maintain Barbie's figure. I think that may be a
little extreme, but I can see both sides.
In recent years,
Mattel has given in a little bit on this issue
and widened Barbie's waist a bit. This took
place around the year 2000. Barbie now has a
more proportioned waist.
Regardless of what
Barbie's figure looks like, or who is right or
wrong on this issue, the real winner in this
debate is Mattel. The added controversy and
publicity only helps to fuel sales. I wonder why
no one talks about Ken's figure?

There is no question,
argument, or debate over the fact that the
Mattel Barbie doll is the most popular doll of
all-time. Barbie has been a favorite of little
girls for nearly 50 years now and a constant top
selling toy in retail stores everywhere. With
that said, there seems to be another doll
favorite in stores these days called the Bratz
dolls.
The Bratz dolls
have recently given Barbie some tough
competition in the doll industry. Introduced in
2001, some of the many Bratz line of dolls
include Bratz Babyz, Bratz Step Out, Bratz Rock
Angelz, and many others as well. You can go
inside any toy section of your favorite retailer
and find a wide selection of these popular new
dolls. Also included is a whole line of Lil
Bratz which are designed for girls under 6 years
of age.
Another factor in
this doll rivalry is the fact that the Bratz
dolls have fashions and accessories that include
every ethnic group, whereas up until the last
couple of years, Barbie had not. Could it have
been the competition from Bratz that forced
Barbie into this change? With Bratz closing the
gap in sales, Barbie needed to come up with some
fresh ideas. It should also be noted that Bratz
dolls are also available in male models as well.
Over the past few
holiday seasons we have seen the Princess Barbie
and the Pauper Anneliesse become very popular
and very good sellers. We are also seeing Barbie
and the Magic of Pegasus. Included in the
selection is Pegasus Annika, Cloud Queen Rayla,
Prince Aidan, and Flying Horse Brietta.
The newest line of
Barbie's is the Barbie Mini Kingdom. This line
of Barbie,s is a miniature collection of dolls
and accessories that are 6" in height.
Bratz has followed
suit with a line called Bratz Forever Diamondz.
At a price of $29.95 it is the most expensive
Bratz dolls yet. The success this new collection
is enjoying is very impressive. A new video game
called Bratz Forever Diamondz is now on the
market for Sony Playstation as well as
Ninentendo. The company hopes this new video
game will follow the success of the Rock Angelz
game. Even more than this, there is talk of a
full length animated motion picture in the works
for release in 2007.
At no other time
in Barbie's history has the competition been
this fierce. Will Barbie survive? Only time will
tell, but I wouldn't bet against her just yet.
It would be hard to imagine life without Barbie.
With nearly 50 years under her belt she has seen
just about everything.
Does anybody see
the similarities between this years Barbie range
and last years Barbie range? Is it just a
coincidence that Princess Anneliesse from last
year is now Princess Annika, Pauper Erika is now
Cloud Queen Rayla and King Dominic/Julian is now
Prince Aidan. They also look pretty similar too!
This is not to say that the new range is not
fantastic because it is but maybe this explains
the sudden interest in something new for
children such as the new Bratz dolls which are
exciting and different and not scared of causing
controversy.
Maybe our children
need toys that reflect the times and do not send
us back to our past. Barbie maybe correct in
trying to try a few different styles in order to
compete with Bratz but diversification may be in
order.

Barbie Dolls ? Where Did They Come
From?

Dear Santa,
Please can I have a Barbie doll for
Christmas?
Barbie dolls have
probably been on Christmas wish lists for
several generations of girls. In fact Barbie has
become a household name for many years. Who
created the first concept of the Barbie doll?
The story started
with the birth of Ruth Mosko in Denver Colarado
in 1916. Ruth married Elliot Handler in 1938.
Elliot Handler and his business partner Harold
?Matt? Matson formed the company Mattel. The
name was created by a combination of their names
?Matt-Ell?. Mattel originally manufactured
picture frames, but after making dolls furniture
from scraps decided to focus on toy
manufacturing for which Mattel is now famous.
Ruth Handler
noticed that her young daughter Barbara was more
interested in playing with adult dolls, than the
baby dolls that were available at that time.
While traveling in Europe she saw a German doll
called ?Lilli? which she bought for her
daughter. The original ?Lilli? doll was not a
children?s toy, but a joke style gift for men.
Mattel bought the
marketing rights for ?Lilli?. They changed the
doll?s name to Barbie, named after Ruth?s
daughter Barbara. Barbie was first released for
sale in the United States in 1959 and became a
hot seller. Barbie?s boyfriend ?Ken? was
introduced in 1960. Ken was named after Ruth?s
son Kenneth.
The Barbie doll
was first displayed at the New York
International American Toy Fair on March 9,
1959. This date became Barbie?s official
birthday .There is now a fictional biography of
the life of ?Barbie? with additional family and
friends created and sold as separate dolls.
The first Barbie
doll wore a black-and-white "zebra-striped"
swimsuit and signature topknot ponytail with
tightly-curled bangs. The dolls were available
either as blonds or brunettes. In succeeding
years, Barbie dolls were made available with
other hair styles and colors. The doll was
marketed as a "Teen-age Fashion Model", so many
fashions were available for her as well.
Barbie's wardrobe was designed by esteemed
Mattel fashion designer Charlotte Johnson, whose
inspiration came from the fashion runways of
Paris.
